Djibouti’s President Guelleh Wins Sixth Straight Term: A Landslide Mandate

Ismail Omar Guelleh, Djibouti's long-serving President, has decisively extended his decades-long rule, securing an overwhelming 97.81% of the votes in the nation's recent presidential election. This victory marks his sixth consecutive term, cementing his position at the helm of the strategically vital Horn of Africa nation.

Overwhelming Support in the Latest Presidential Polls

Official figures, released by Djibouti’s state-run news agency, confirmed Guelleh's commanding win with 97.81% of the ballots cast on Friday. His only challenger, Mohamed Farah Samatar of the Unified Democratic Centre (CDU), managed to secure just 2.19% of the vote. Samatar's party holds no parliamentary representation, and his campaign faced significant challenges in gaining public visibility ahead of the polls. Following the preliminary announcements, the 78-year-old President Guelleh simply declared 'Reelected' on X (formerly Twitter).

Decades of Leadership and Strategic Importance

This latest five-year mandate was made possible after lawmakers last year lifted the previous presidential age restrictions. The election saw a robust voter turnout of 80.4% among the approximately 256,000 registered voters – roughly a quarter of Djibouti's population of one million. Guelleh has been a continuous presence in Djibouti's political landscape since assuming power in 1999.

Nestled strategically between Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia, Djibouti’s geographic significance is amplified by its control of the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a crucial maritime chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

Election Day Dynamics and Campaign Disparity

On election day, President Guelleh expressed confidence, telling reporters at Djibouti’s City Hall, "By the grace of God, we have arrived here, and we hope that this will end in victory." Despite an initial scheduled close at 6 PM local time, polling stations extended their hours by an additional sixty minutes to accommodate unforeseen delays. The outcome appeared largely predetermined, with widespread expectations favoring Guelleh.

His campaign commanded massive rallies, drawing thousands, and his imagery dominated the capital. In stark contrast, opposition challenger Samatar's events, even those covered by state media, reportedly attracted only a handful of attendees, as noted by AFP. Nevertheless, Samatar pressed on, advocating for "another Djibouti is possible" in the Tadjourah and Obock regions. This sentiment was echoed by citizens like Deka Aden Mohamed, 38, who told AFP he intended to vote for Guelleh, adding candidly, "I don’t even know what his opponent looks like."

Historical Context and Human Rights Concerns

This landslide echoes Guelleh’s previous triumph in 2021, where he secured approximately 98% of the vote. The political landscape in Djibouti has seen significant shifts, with two prominent opposition parties consistently boycotting elections since 2016, a move that followed Guelleh's controversial decision to abolish presidential term limits in 2010. Furthermore, human rights organizations have frequently voiced concerns over alleged repression of free speech and political dissent by government authorities, accusations which Djibouti’s government consistently denies.

As Djibouti’s President Guelleh wins his sixth straight term in office, the nation embarks on another five years under the leadership of its long-serving president, whose formidable electoral support stands in contrast to ongoing debates regarding political freedoms and democratic practices.
