GM isn’t ready to rip off the CarPlay/Android Auto band-aid quite yet
Last week, General Motors CEO Mary Barra generated significant discussion when she stated that the automaker would eventually discontinue support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across all its gasoline-powered vehicles. This announcement followed the company's prior success in removing phone mirroring capabilities from most of its electric vehicle lineup, indicating a broader strategy to extend this change to its internal combustion engine models as well.
However, GM is now providing clarification, stressing that this shift will not happen immediately.
Malorie Lucich, a spokesperson for GM, released a statement reassuring customers: "We are not making any changes to existing vehicles. If your car supports Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, that will continue. Both will remain available in all GM gas-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future. As we advance toward our centralized computing platform, we’ll gradually move to a better, more deeply integrated experience — a direction the broader industry is taking as vehicles become more software-defined. This will happen over time, not overnight. We value our collaboration with Apple and Google and remain focused on delivering experiences customers love." This statement was originally shared withMacRumors.
During an appearance on theDecoder podcast, Barra had previously hinted that the removal of these features would align with the introduction of new model refreshes. She commented, "As we move forward with each new vehicle and major new vehicle launch, I think you’re going to see us consistent on that."
It now appears that the full discontinuation of CarPlay and Android Auto won't truly begin until GM is prepared to launch its recently unveilednew centralized vehicle computing platform. This advanced system, designed to reduce control module complexity and enhance over-the-air software update capabilities, is scheduled to debut first in the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, before gradually making its way into GM’s gasoline vehicle portfolio.
