Israel Intensifies Military Presence in Southern Lebanon Amid Mounting Concerns
The Israeli military has significantly escalated its operations in southern Lebanon, deploying additional forces as it pushes to deepen a controversial ground invasion. This expansion comes despite widespread international concern regarding Israel's deadly bombardments and its efforts to create a broader presence within Lebanese territory. The move has been met with stern warnings from Lebanese officials, who condemn these actions as grave threats to national sovereignty and violations of international law.
On Thursday, a social media post from the Israeli military confirmed that troops from Division 162 would commence operations in southern Lebanon. The stated objective is to “expand” a so-called “buffer zone” in the region. This new deployment sees Division 162 joining two other army divisions already active in the area, signaling a considerable increase in military footprint.
Strategic ‘Buffer Zone’ Fuels Regional Tensions
This surge in troop deployment closely follows an announcement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Just a day prior, Netanyahu outlined plans for the military to establish “a larger buffer zone” in southern Lebanon, aiming to repel potential missile threats emanating from the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. The intensified Israeli attacks on its northern neighbor began in early March, triggered by Hezbollah’s rocket fire into Israeli territory, which followed the February 28 assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in what has been described as the US-Israel war on Iran.
Since the beginning of March, Israel has conducted extensive aerial and ground assaults across Lebanon. These military actions have been accompanied by mass forced displacement orders, impacting residents in the country’s south and several suburbs of the capital, Beirut. The United Nations reports that over 1.2 million people have been compelled to leave their homes, raising significant alarms about a burgeoning humanitarian crisis. According to figures from Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, these attacks have tragically resulted in at least 1,116 fatalities and left 3,229 others wounded.
International Warnings and Lebanese Condemnation
The international community has actively called for de-escalation, with major powers such as France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and Canada issuing a joint warning last week. They cautioned that an expanded Israeli ground offensive “would have devastating humanitarian consequences” and “must be averted.” However, despite these admonitions, Israeli forces have continued to advance deeper into Lebanese territory. Defence Minister Israel Katz further stated that Lebanese citizens would not be permitted to return to their homes in the south until the security of northern Israel is fully guaranteed.
In response to Israel’s escalating actions, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam conveyed his grave concerns to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during a phone call on Thursday. Salam’s office released a readout of the talks, confirming that the Lebanese leader informed Guterres that Israel’s ongoing actions and statements “constitute a matter of utmost gravity that threatens Lebanon’s sovereignty” and directly contravene international law and the UN Charter. Furthermore, Salam indicated that his government intends to submit a formal complaint to the UN Security Council, urging the global body “to fulfill its responsibilities in putting an end to these violations.”
Human Rights Groups Denounce Israeli Actions
Amnesty International has also weighed in, highlighting that the destruction of bridges and homes in southern Lebanon mirrors Israel’s “record of atrocity crimes” observed in the Gaza Strip, where it has been conducting a genocidal war against Palestinians since October 2023. “The Israeli military has already extensively destroyed and devastated civilian life in southern Lebanon. The world must not stand by as Israeli leaders shamelessly threaten further destruction and displacement,” the rights group asserted in a statement on X. They further called for accountability, stating, “Israel must not be allowed to violate international law with impunity across the region. World leaders must uphold their international legal obligations to halt Israel’s unlawful destruction of civilian property.”
Hezbollah Pledges Continued Resistance Amid Clashes
Concurrently, Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem reiterated this week his group’s commitment to continue fighting “without limits” against what he termed “an enemy that occupies land and continues daily aggression.” On Thursday alone, Hezbollah announced more than 45 military operations targeting Israel, which included rocket and drone launches, as well as attacks on Israeli troops positioned inside Lebanon. The group also claimed to have targeted several Israeli armored vehicles with guided missiles, specifically mentioning two Merkava tanks in the border town of Deir Siryan. Meanwhile, a Hezbollah rocket strike on the Israeli coastal city of Nahariya reportedly resulted in one fatality and eleven injuries, according to Israeli authorities. Separately, the Israeli military confirmed the death of one soldier and the injury of four others in an “incident” in southern Lebanon.
The Deepening Crisis as Israel Sends More Troops into Southern Lebanon
As Israel sends more troops into southern Lebanon, the region stands at a critical juncture. The escalating ground invasion, coupled with the profound humanitarian impact and stark warnings from both international bodies and Lebanese leadership, underscores a rapidly deteriorating situation. The calls for adherence to international law and protection of civilian lives resonate globally as the conflict continues to unfold with grave implications for regional stability and human security.
