Unpacking the Escalating Middle East Conflict

The Middle East is currently gripped by a severe and rapidly evolving conflict, marked by sustained military engagements between Iran, Israel, and the United States. For over nineteen days, explosions have reverberated across Iran, Israel, and various Gulf states, following the commencement of US and Israeli military actions against Iran on February 28th. This article serves as a crucialUS-Israel attacks on Iran: death toll and injuries live tracker, detailing the confirmed human cost of the ongoing hostilities across the region.

Tehran has responded to the initial strikes with a series of missile and drone launches targeting Israeli facilities and US military bases situated throughout the Middle East. These actions align with Iran's prior warnings that any assault on its territory would be met with retaliatory strikes against US military installations, which it considers legitimate targets.

US Central Command (CENTCOM), overseeing American forces in the region, reported on March 16 that US forces had struck over 7,000 targets within Iran since February 28. In counter-response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims to have launched attacks on at least 27 US-deployed military bases across the Middle East, in addition to targeting Israeli military sites in Tel Aviv and other parts of Israel.

Iranian strikes have impacted nine countries in the region: Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Notably, an Iranian drone also struck a runway at a UK military base in Cyprus. While a majority of these attacks have reportedly been intercepted, the human toll continues to mount.
